about

Batswing Saloon formed in Brisbane in 1986 and were the first all girl band from that town to release a single. Harold and Maude, inspired by the movie and soundtrack of the same name, was released in 1988, sold well in their hometown as well as Sydney, Melbourne, London, Germany and New York.

The single (b/w another original track, Split Level World) was produced by Brisbane indie music legends Ian Wadley and Greg Wadley on a 4-track in the band’s practice room in the old Target building in Fortitude Valley.

Harold and Maude reached number 12 on the 4ZZZ Hot 100 only two weeks after its release, and the band was voted 4th best new independent group in the RAM readers poll of that year, the only Brisbane group to make the list.

Original singer Anne Deller left the band in 1987 because of other commitments and Liza McDonald joined the band. Apart form Annie and Liza, the band featured Michelle Bowden on lead guitar, Leanne Holman on rhythm guitar, Jenny May on bass and Sue Holman on drums. Another Brisbane indie muso, Andrew Bartlett, regularly did the sound mixing for the band at their gigs around Brisbane and South East Queensland where they supported touring acts including Hunters and Collectors, TISM and the Hoodoo Gurus.

Batswing Saloon wound down in 1990 but Leanne went on to make a special guest appearance with Too Green for Summer, Sue also played in Cut while Michelle has played guitar in many bands including Gravelrash, Chopper Division and most recently Koko Uzi.
